9-10 Savile Row -----

The brief

Develop a bespoke jacquard or dobby weave design to complement Holland & Sherry’s 9-10 Saville Row Collection. A collection of designs that offer a glimpse into their centuries-old association with Savile Row and Bespoke tailoring while at the same time embracing the transitional aesthetic of interiors.

Use Holland & Sherry’s heritage theme and palette of rich mélange merino wools for inspiration. Promoting the natural, sustainable, and biodegradable properties of wool in celebration of the Campaign for Wool’s 10th anniversary.

The work

My design recognises the relationship between craftsman and street. Informed by the traditional techniques practiced inside the tailor shops on Savile Row, the design picks up the similarities between chalk marks on cloth and the painted markings on the road outside. The exploration of Savile Row using Google street view allowed a playful approach to gathering imagery and utilized the restrictions of lockdown.

The final fabric is an experimental stripe design, woven as a double cloth jacquard, a nod to the duality of the interior and exterior activities on Savile Row. Using grey, white, and yellow to create harmony with the rest of the 9-10 Savile collection.

The design being woven at Holland & Sherry Ltd

“Ruby was able to put all of the pieces together, research, and design development resulting in a pleasing, useable design that has a good mix of tradition and modernity. Her inspiration of the street markings, viewing the area by Google Maps, and connecting those elements with the chalk markings used to cut the pattern pieces was a novel approach to meet the design criteria.”
