Parallax

I first explored signage through collage. Slicing up imagery, referencing road markings, and working in stripes, geometric shapes, and bold colour.

I played with angles and spacing.

I referenced pattern and colour from image research into signage and road markings.

I reworked these collages, moving the paper in the scanner as it was processing. Changing the geometric structures to something harder to read visually.

My palette consisted of colours from the landscape; the sky and land, and the colours of the signage and markings.

I distorted weave structures and imagery by using colour sequencing in the warp and weft, creating areas of clarity and obscurity.

Arrows create a sense of movement and travel.

Experiments with yarn weights allowed be explore scales of pattern.

I studied road signage, recreating them in dobby cloth designs.

I sourced cotton to create pure cotton samples. These designs can therefore be more easily recycled at the end of their lives.

Working within these restrictions helped develop the obscuring of pattern. As the warp and weft threads were the same in places.

CAD software gave me the freedom to experiments with colour and repeat without the need for materials and the associated wastage. This design is a 16 shaft dobby cloth simulation using worsted lambswool.

Contrasting arrows and stripes created this warped visual effect.

Using CAD I could explore repeats and think about how the design could look through industrial production, without the restriction of loom widths.

Working from my lastest monomaterial samples, I experimented with the range of hues I coudl achieve with a two colour warp and weft using red, yellow, green and blue.
